THE PARK – GOOD PLACE FOR STUDYING ENGLISH

<Effective English Study Techniques>

THE PARK – GOOD PLACE FOR STUDYING ENGLISH

English is one of the most important languages for Vietnamese students and it’s hard to reach the level that students can speak and listen to English well by only studying at high schools or universities. Therefore, some students have to get extra lessons at some language centers to improve their English skills. However, the tuition fee is often not affordable for all students. So the park is a good place for them to improve English skills. Why? The main reason is that many foreigners gather at park, and most of them are willing to communicate with students. They tell them about the culture of the countries they live or they have traveled to. They are very friendly with students. Students need to be confident and polite enough to start conservation with them. For example, 23-9 Park is one of the most crowed parks with lots of foreigners. Students usually come there for not only relaxing but also chatting with foreigners. They can learn more about the culture from foreigners. Sometimes, they often do some homework such as recording an interview with foreigners, making a survey. Hence, Park is the good place for relaxing, improving language skills and learning more about the culture.

International Exchange programs 2 -Japan-

[International Exchange programs 2 -Japan-]

To continue the interesting flow of exchange programs since last week, we will introduce another type of exchange today, which is studying long-term in some famous universities in Japan. The country is so well-known for its reliable education system that it attracts a large number of overseas students every year. Although studying abroad in Japan is very popular with a variety of kinds such as Japanese Government Scholarship Students (Monbukagakusho: MEXT), privately financed scholarships and exchange programs, in this article we will only focus on exchange programs.
This program is specially designed for students whose institutions have a university-level student exchange agreement with colleges and universities in Japan. Those schools in Japan will send the application guide to partner universities in all over the world to call for participants. When admitted, students will take ordinary courses which are taught in Japanese or English in undergraduate faculties or in graduate schools. Usually classes are given in Japanese so students should have Japanese language proficiency. Apart from academic work, students also bear a chance to experience Japanese culture and lifestyle as they spend a long time there. Some choose to stay in the dormitory to enjoy international atmosphere with foreign students while the other head to home stay family. Thanks to this type of program, students can not only attain useful knowledge from one of the best education systems in the world but also brush up their language ability and culture experience.
At present, almost every Japanese university has a special exchange program for overseas students. You can search for information on their website or seek help from The Japan Foundation and our fan page.
We still have one more specialty for you next week. Don’t switch the channel as we are coming back shortly.

Exchange programs

[Exchange programs]

As the relationship between Japan and Asian countries is growing deeper in substance, there are more and more exchange programs awarded to Asian youth with opportunities to visit Japan and enjoy the cultural wonders. Among them are three famous types of programs that have been captured great attention from many Asian students. The first one is short-term exchange tours in which Asian youth have a chance to spend 1 or 2 weeks in Japan to experience allures and values of Japan through various activities. Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) and The Youth-
Exchange Project with Asia-Oceania and North America (Kizuna) launched by Japan’s government and Japan International Cooperation Center are the 2 most famous examples recently. These 2 programs entail a wide array of activities for Asian youth in Japan such as courtesy visit to governmental offices, schools and corporates, homestay, culture swap.
These are called invitation program as they welcome young generation to come to Japan.
Meanwhile, there are also Dispatch Programs that sends young Japanese students to other countries or regions to broaden their views to the world. It is not difficult to figure out that Vietnam Japan Youth Exchange (VJYE) belongs to this type of program.
As Japanese students participate in this exchange, they will learn about society, culture and lifestyle of the local residents during their field trips, school exchanges and homestay.
These short-term exchange opportunities are created so that they can promote the mutual understanding and trust between Japan and other regions. Are you excited to become participants of these above programs? There are two more types of exchange programs coming up next. Stay tuned and be updated with AAEE for more information.

Many Vietnamese universities want their students not only to master at studying but also improve their health. Therefore, besides the research and study system, there is a compulsory physical education system in university. There are different types of physical activities such as swimming, table tennis, karate etc. Among them Vovinam is one of the most interesting activities which many students feel interested in.

Buddhist art (C.600 BC-AD700)

<Art>
Buddhist art (C.600 BC-AD700)
Buddhism and its arts have existed for more than 2.500 years. In about 600-500 BC, Indian artist began creating iconography and symbolism to spread Buddha’s teachings. Within 600 years, Buddhist artists were using ideas they had absorbed from Roman artists.
Buddhist art was all about illustrating the story of Buddha and explaining events from the experiences of Siddhartha Gautama, a spiritual teacher who founded Buddhism. The religion spread from northern India across central, Eastern and South East Asia. In the earliest Buddhist art, Buddha was not represented in human form. Instead, his presence was indicated by a sign such as the lotus flower, footprints, an empty seat or space beneath a parasol, Artists originally created stylized, flat-looking paintings and reliefs.
The first image of Buddha in human form was carved around the end ò the first century AD in an area of India known as Gandhara. The art that developed there was clearly inspired by Greek and Roman art as the Buddha was portrayed realistically and usually with curly hair, resembling Roman images of Apolo. In other parts of India, artists began creating their own styles and individual interpretations of Buddha. Gandharan art influenced the sculpture of Mathura, a city in northern India and the ideas spread to part of China, Korea and Japan.
As Buddhism spread through Asia, as well as different artistic styles and interpretations of Buddha, various symbols were shared across cultures. Some of these became distinctly different, while other aspects were the same as each other. Colors and hand gestures were two particular areas of symbolism that became incorporated into the art of various countries. Colors also have universal meanings in Buddhist art: 5 colors of white, yellow, red, blue and green were believed to assist spiritual transformations if viewers meditated on the individual colors, so they frequently appeared in the Buddhist of various countries.

GREEN SUMMER CAMPAIGN

GREEN SUMMER CAMPAIGN <Vietnam>
Besides the research and study activities in university, most of the Vietnamese students usually take part in social activities. One of the meaningful social activities is GREEN SUMMER CAMPAIN- annual summervolunteer program. Green Summer Campaign is among the five main campaigns mobilized by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and the Vietnamese Students Association. The annual program began in 1993 as an anti-illiteracy campaign, “Chien Dich Anh Sang Van Hoa He” (Summer Anti-Illiteracy Campaign), and it was renamed “Mua He Xanh” (GREEN SUMMER CAMPAIGN) in 1997. In every summer Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of university organizes this campaign. The activities and plans vary according to the university. But the final objective is to bring its students to community services and charity events. They will indulge in social welfare, children activities and rural development programs such as anti-illiteracy (teaching English, internet, computer skills), improving the environment, building ‘gratitude’ houses for poor and disadvantaged residents and a lot more activities like that. The content of program has improved through years. It has become better and more meaningful day by day. Whenever Green Summer Campaign is kicked off with a bid to boost widespread youth volunteer activities, it attracts lots of students, often with an initial participation by more than 4,000 youngsters. They take part in with their full energy their passions. With blue T-shirts, they go with dreams: “With the energy of youth, bring happiness to people”. Blue is the color which represents for youth in Vietnam. Green Summer Campaign has become one of the most interesting unforgettable memories of Vietnamese Students.

Transportation in Vietnam

<Vietnam>
Many students in Vietnam go to university by bus. Therefore, bus is a familiar concept among Vietnamese Students. Most of the students choose bus as a daily transportation because bus fee for students is really cheap just about 2000 VND( about 1/10 of one dollar). The bus fare is so cheap because the government has sponsored about 2/3 of bus fee for the students. They want to encourage students to go to school by bus as the increasing numbers of personal transportation are not good for environment. They also sometimes organize some programs to motivate students such as,” Lets bus to school”, “Collecting bus tickets to change gift”. Besides, some students’ houses are far away from their school and long distance will cost much fuels and is not safe as well. After a long class, they can have time for sleeping and relaxing in bus. Bus is the transportation used not only for going to school but also for travelling around the HCM city. Some buses will take you to many landscapes such as DInh Doc Lap, Ben Thanh Market, Dia Dao Cu Chi, Dam sen Park etc. All in all taking a bus while traveling is a good choice for Vietnamese students.

The 2nd VJYE has finished with so many sweet and unforgettable memories.

[All good things come to an end]

Finally, the 2nd VJYE has finished with so many sweet and unforgettable memories. Japanese and Vietnamese students together have done a variety of meaningful activities, visited several places and discovered different sites of Vietnam. All of them now have understood more about the culture and lifestyle of Vietnamese people.We believe that they will never forget the time they spent together, the moments they enjoyed and the memories they themselves have created.

However, time flies so fast that we cannot believe now we are thousand miles apart and dont know when we will meet again. Everything happened just like yesterday. Memories still stay but distance may take us apart. Thus,we wish that all of them will always appreciate what they have got, and what they have received through this program.

All of us really dont want to say good bye. We will definately meet again one day. Goodbye is not an end, but an opening for a new story, a new journey and a new start. So we have to believe in the future, in destiny and in ourselves that we will surely see each other again.

Goodbye and have a safe flight all the Japanese participants. Hope that you have had good time filled with wonderful memories and joys and experiences in Vietnam. Vietnamese people love you and wait for your coming back.

Thank you and see you again

Viet Nam- Japan Youth Exchange 2014 11th day (Sep 10) – the last day

Viet Nam- Japan Youth Exchange 2014
11th day (Sep 10) – the last day
The last day of VJYE 2014 finally came; the day for reviewing our learnings by being the part of the program, the day for biding Goodbyes, the day for VJYEer ‘s last moments and the day for starting of a new journey!
Waking up early in the morning with emotions, we quickly gathered at Hoa Sen University as we knew that we had little time for staying and hanging out together. At that time, every second was a treasure for us.
The program was divided into six sections. The first section was time for motivational session by Seki Sensei. He shared his life story with us and helped us to get inspired. We were so much motivated that we had lots of different feelings at that time. Thanks to Seki-Sensei, we could see different perspective and bigger picture about life that we couldn’t observe before.
The second section was the time for last discussion. We were all divided into four groups to discuss about everything that we learned throughout the journey. Each group had one different topic which were “Local Life Culture”, “Lectures about Green Business and Farm Models in BInh Phuoc Province”, “International Friendship” and “Leadership and Membership.” Having really short time for big report we had a hard time staying and discussing together. By then, the distance among us became narrower. Every one of us got united and worked hard for the report completion without having lunch.
The third section was the time for superstars to get on stage! We were dressed in suit as we all wanted to perform this presentation in a serious way. We were happy by knowing how impressive and professional the presentation was. Each group had different way of giving their presentation and each of them was really good. For example, one of the groups drew lots of picture on the paper instead of using PowerPoint to show how good the leadership was. Another group used clip to show their presentation about the international friendship which was too much emotional.
The fourth section was the time for photos and letters. We wrote about what we thought, how we felt about the each other and put it in the envelopes. It was exciting and meaningful and a valuable treasure for all our life. These were really unforgettable memories in our lives. Afterwards, we took lots of photos in various styles; from formal to crazy. We had no words to express how happy we were. At the same time we also had no words to share as we all were aware that the time for saying goodbyes nearly came and we felt that was so quick. All of us cried so much as we had just few hours for staying together.
The fifth section of the day was last dinner of the program. We ate, drunk, enjoyed a game till the final section arrived. It was time for biding goodbye. We all had tears in our eyes and lots of emotions in our heart. For the last section words cannot justify our feelings. Thank you!

VJYE 2014, Day 6

Day 6
Friday, September 5 th, 2014
Dressed in formal suits, we visited AEON Mall in Tan Phu District with a view to learn the advanced management applied here. As you know, AEON is now one of the largest retailing groups in the world with over 179 member companies both inside and outside Japan. Founded 1758, AEON Group with its history spanning over 250 years has one of the longest history as a retailer in Japan. Since 2011, it has implemented a new project investing into Viet Nam. AEON Mall is a pride of AEON Group which is located on the suburban area of HCMC. Despite of its location, AEON Mall soon became a popular destination in HCMC where people could purchase high-quality Japanese product as well as understand more about Japan with a variety of Japanese food. It is not only a shopping mall but also an ambassador that introduces Japanese Culture to Vietnamese. The Director of the Mall showed us an overview of the challenges and chances that the company had to face from the very first day in Vietnam as well as the “secrets” that led to the triumphs now. After that, we took a tour around to find out more about different departments there(Accounting, Marketing, Administration). We learned from the questions and answers. Real-life experience showed its advantages against theory. This was one of the most interesting parts of the Program, which provided us information regarding our future job.
In the evening, we headed for Binh Phuoc Province, where our Field Trip would be held. Naturally, I felt no space between Japanese and Vietnamese participants. On the bus, we talked to each other, we slept together, and we told jokes to forget about the weariness from the tight schedule. I would love to call our bus, “The bus of laughters and crazy minds”. We arrived in Binh Phuoc and attended the Opening Ceremony there. All of us were so eager to participate in another activity “Homestay”. Our host family came to welcomed us to be one of their family`s member for one day. From my point of view, homestay is the best experience if you want to discover local life. Each family is a cell of the society; it is where the tradition begins. One night with our host family helped us to get the panoramic view of Vietnamese culture. We celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival together and enjoyed home-made dishes which were full of love and care. We sang under the moonlight and shared funny stories with each other. We felt the warmth of hospitality from our host family. We appreciated them so much for giving us such a wonderful moment: “a truly Vietnamese culture”.
