CULTURE EXCHANGE IN THE EYES OF VIETNAMESE STUDENTS

<Cultural Exchange>

CULTURE EXCHANGE IN THE EYES OF VIETNAMESE STUDENTS

For a very long time, culture exchange has been a popular activity among students in the highly developed countries. However, it still remains a “mystery” to most of the Vietnamese students. To better understand the cognition of Vietnamese students on culture exchange, I decided to have a short interview of a group of freshmen from the Faculty of English of Ho Chi Minh University of Social Science and Humanity, who have just begun their academic life and are eager to participate in the international programs.
I asked Vy, “In your own opinion, what is culture exchange?” She replied: “I think culture exchange is a series of activities for students from different nations or cultures, including homestay, conference and swap programs. Its aim is to flourish the relationship between two countries as well as narrow down both tangible and intangible space between people”. Trung; a young and ambitious boy said: “We would like to take part in these programs to know more about the far-away cultures and become a global citizen. But in Vietnam, there is no widespread and official network of culture exchange and these mainly concentrate in the big cities like Ho Chi Minh City and Ha Noi. We all want experience more.” I could feel the enthusiasm of these adventurous students. I hope that one day they will “taste” one culture exchange programs by themselves to grow up and deeply appreciate the international friendships as well as acquire some moral values that they have never imagined of from “CULTURAL EXCHANGE” and justify the old saying: “If you want to be successful, never live in a small pond, swim into the vast ocean”.
